The Baltic’s largest Christmas market: 400 artisans and free admission in Kipsala

Let’s be honest for a second. We all know that feeling of dread—wandering aimlessly through a neon-lit shopping mall, looking for a gift that doesn’t scream “I bought this five minutes ago.” We crave connection. We crave stories.

Well, I have good news. If you are in Riga between December 12th and 14th, the cure for the common Christmas is happening at the Kipsala International Exhibition Centre.

This isn’t just a market; it’s a massive cultural handshake. The Baltic EXPO is returning as the largest three-day Christmas market in the region. Picture this: 417 different vendors under one roof.

And it’s a true Baltic family reunion. You’ll find 303 locals from Latvia, joined by 85 neighbors from Lithuania and 29 from Estonia. It’s a rare chance to see the distinct craftsmanship of all three nations in a single afternoon.

What strikes me most about this year’s lineup is the move away from mass production. As Rihards Mickēvičs, the project manager, beautifully puts it: “The Baltic region is exceptionally rich in things created with heart, patience, and quiet pride”.

Whether you are hunting for ceramics, wooden crafts, textiles, or distinct jewelry, you are buying a story, not just an object. There are toys for the little ones, books for the thinkers, and handmade soaps and candles to get you through the dark winter nights.

For the foodies among us (and I know you’re out there), there is a dedicated “Receptes” food zone. You can sample seasonal treats, buy local delicacies for your holiday table, and just indulge a little.

And if you’re a parent dreading the phrase “I’m bored,” relax. The event is incredibly family-friendly. There’s a creative zone called “Rotaļnīca” offering free workshops, plus a massive inflatable attraction area for the younger crowd to burn off that holiday energy.

Here is the best part: in a world where everything costs money, entrance to the Baltic EXPO is completely free.

The organizers are expecting a surge of international visitors this year, thanks to Riga’s growing reputation as a top winter destination.

So, my advice? Plan ahead.

The doors open at 12:00 on Friday, December 12th, and the magic runs through Sunday evening 15th.

Come for the gifts, stay for the warmth. Because as Mickēvičs reminds us, Christmas isn’t about quantity—it’s about “warmth and care”.
