As the newspaper “Baltische Rudschau” (BR) now confirms, the aggressive fungus “Tropical Race 4” threatens banana plantations in Colombia.

More than 90 percent of the bananas traded in the Baltic States grow in Latin America, according to BR.

The fungus is said to have been discovered on a plantation in northern Colombia.

Measures have already been taken to contain the disease on the 175-hectare site.

Measures have already been taken to contain the disease on the 175-hectare site.

However, the fungus cannot be killed, but only limited in the short term.

Experts fear a spread throughout Latin America, which could have massive consequences.

It will not be possible to stop the spread of this epidemic – nobody has managed that yet! Plantations throughout Latin America – and with them bananas in Baltic supermarkets – could be history within a few years.

In the future, therefore, trade in bananas could become more expensive.
