Russian citizen arrested on suspicion of espionage in Latvia

Riga (BR) – The Latvian security authorities have arrested a Russian citizen on suspicion of espionage. The suspect is suspected of having collected information on critical infrastructure and military objects in Latvia for the Russian secret service.

He is also accused of supporting activities directed against the state. The security police of the EU and NATO country announced in Riga on Wednesday that the suspect is under investigation. Details of the supported activities were not given.

The arrest was made on December 20. Five searches in and around the capital Riga led to the seizure of numerous data carriers and documents, the security police said in their statement.

The Latvian authorities did not provide any information on the gender or identity of the suspect. No further details about the person were released.
