“Found in the Collection” is the most ambitious exhibition from the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre collection to date. It displays art and cultural values collected in the nine years since the centre was created and confirms its active presence on the contemporary art scene. In a sense, the exhibition is a visual diary featuring stories of symposia and exhibitions, offering evidence of vibrant communication and cooperation towards exciting art projects and recording meaningful dialogues and monologues about current developments in the art world where the human touch takes centre stage – that of the artist, the curator and the collector.
The exhibition catalogue features Latvian and international artists from the Rothko Centre’s vast and excellent collection totalling almost three thousand artworks in different mediums. To reaffirm the unbreakable bond between art and its creator, the publication also outlines the artists’ creative biographies and stylistic trajectories.
“Found in the Collection” is the first publication about the jewels in the Rothko Centre collection. It highlights each artist’s special bond with the institution and the importance of each contribution to its emergence, existence and continued development. The catalogue also leaves the door open for further artistic research because the collection contains plenty more surprises and keeps growing into the largest and most significant assemblage of professional art in the Latgale region.
At 4 p.m. on Friday 18 March, the Rothko Centre is organising an official opening event for this seminal publication and invites featured artists and local and visiting art lovers to join the celebration.
The exhibition and its catalogue are another step for the city of Daugavpils towards the European Capital of Culture 2027.
