Baltic: Latvia’s government decides on family aid

Latvias government wants to support families in the Corona crisis with a one-time payment of 500 euros per child.

The financial aid is to be granted automatically by the State Social Insurance Institution without an application. This was decided by the cabinet in Riga on Tuesday. The parliament of the Baltic EU country with 1.9 million inhabitants still has to agree.

Support is to be provided for all children under 15 years of age and for young people up to 20 years of age in education. Parents of children born in Latvia before the end of the Corona emergency, which will last until 6 April, will also be entitled to the state benefit.

According to the Latvian Ministry of Welfare, a total of 182 million euros is needed for the measure. In addition, a one-time financial support of 200 euros for senior citizens and people with disabilities is being discussed.
