In 1994, the Old Town of Vilnius was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The largest Old Town in Eastern Europe is architecturally the richest part of Vilnius. Catholics know very well the Gates of Dawn and its painting of Mother of God, which is said to have miracle-working powers. Vilnius University is one of the oldest and most famous higher schools of Eastern Europe. The President’s Office is a notable piece of Lithuanian Classicism. The Cathedral dating from the times of Mindaugas stands in the territory of the Lower Castle. The residence of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania that remembers famous and noble rulers.
