By The George Washington university singers to tour the Baltics may 2015
Collegiate choral ensemble to perform works by American composers in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia
Alexandria, VA, USA – Classical Movements is pleased to announce the upcoming concerts for The George Washington University Singers and a cappella group The Troubadours, under the direction of Gisele Becker, in the Baltics May 20-27, 2015.
This trip marks the choir’s first tour to the Baltics in their well-rounded touring history.
The ensemble will perform a mostly-American repertoire, including works by Copland, Brubeck, and Whitacre in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. The ensemble’s concert at St. John’s Church in Riga, Latvia will begin with a 15-minute program by local choral ensemble, Latvian Voices.
In addition to concerts and sightseeing, the ensemble will also participate in an outreach concert at Keila SOS Children’s Village in Tallinn, Estonia on May 26th.
All concert and travel arrangements have been made by Classical Movements.
The George Washington University Singers is an auditioned mixed chorus of both undergraduate and graduate students of The George Washington University in Washington, DC.
Besides regular performances at GW, the University Singers has appeared at the Washington National Cathedral, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Schlesinger Performing Arts Center. Every other year, the University Singers travels internationally. Past tours have been to Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, South Africa and Brazil. Besides concert performances, the University Singers has participated in community outreach and university collaborations.
The Troubadours – affectionately known as “The Troubs” – is a co-ed a cappella group based at The George Washington University in the heart of nation’s capital.
Founded in 1925, generations of Troubadours have given countless performances for adoring fans worldwide.
The original “Traveling Troubadours” toured internationally to entertain U.S. military personnel on remote overseas bases, and the organization has since developed into a modern, student-run a cappella troupe.
The Troubs continue to perform original arrangements of songs from every conceivable genre, and their talent and unique sound has earned high praise from industry experts and community members alike.
Gisele Becker has been Director of Choral Activities at GW since 2005.
Under her leadership, the University Singers and Chamber Choir have performed some of the great choral masterpieces including the Mozart Requiem, Bach Magnificat, Orff Carmina Burana, Mendelssohn Elijah and Bernstein Chichester Psalms.
Besides international tours to Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, South Africa and Brazil, the choirs has also performed locally at the Kennedy Center, Strathmore Performing Arts Center and Schlesinger Concert Hall.
Besides her work at GW, Ms. Becker also serves as Music Director of the Cantate Chamber Singers, a group that champions new and underperformed works.
They have released three CDs of their commissions in the past three years; Maurice Saylor’s “The Hunting of the Snark” on the Naxos label, Andrew Simpson’s ” A Crown of Stars” on the Albany label and “A Britten Holiday” on Raven Records as part of our celebration of Britten’s centenary.
