Tennis: Berankis lost in the first round of Australian Open

Unsuccessful start of the 2014 season for the best Lithuanian tennis player, Ričardas Berankis, who lost in the first round of the Australian Open. Ernests Gulbis qualified to the second round.

The 23-year old Lithuanian lost in three sets to the 25-year old Ukrainian Alexander Dolgapolov with result 7-5, 7-5, 6-2 and finished his part in the first Grand Slam of the season earlier than he expected. Previous season, Berankis reached the third round in the tournament and lost to world number three, the British Andy Murray. Therefore, The Lithuanian is going to lose ranking points since he failed to defend them.

Berankis, who passed the qualification round in easy way, and Dolgapolov, who is taking the 55th place in the world managed to serve well during the first set. At the 11th game, when the scoreboard showed 5-5, the Ukrainian broke the serves of the Lithuanian who is ranked at the 130th place in the world.

The same scenario repeated itself in the second set. During the third set, Dolgapolov reached two breaks in a row in the early stage and took the leadership.

The way from 3-0 to 6-2 at the final set was easy and the Ukrainian won the match after two hours and two minutes of playing.

Berankis who won the qualifications, will get 35 ATP ranking points and will enjoy from 30,000 Australian dollars prize money.

While Berankis will make his way home, his Latvian neighbor, Ernests Gulbis will continue to the second round. The25-year old Latvian who is taking the 24th place in the world passed a tough match against the Argentinian Juan Monako with 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(7-4), 6-2. Monako who is taking the 42nd place in the world gave a serious fight to Gulbis.

The 29-year old Argentinian won the first set with one sided score 6-1. Gulbis woke up in the second set and won 6-4.

During the third set both players presented good tennis and the winner of the set at the end was Gulbis who managed to win it only in the tie break with seven points to four. The fourth set was again one sided, but this time, the winner was the Latvian number one.

In the second round, the Latvian who is ranked at the 23rd place in the tournament will play against the American Sam Quarry who is taking the 51st place in the world. The 26-year old American won at the first round against the Columbian Santiago Giraldo in four sets with 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(7-3).
