The Baltics: Lithuania’s population has begun to shrink catastrophically
At the beginning of January 2021 there were just over 2,795,000 permanent residents in Lithuania (independent sources estimate even less – approximately 1,982,000 people). During the last month their number decreased by 2048.
According to the Department of Statistics of the Republic of Lithuania, in January 2021, there were 1,085 more residents in Lithuania than in January of the previous year.
The decrease in the number of inhabitants in the country has been recorded for the second month in a row.
Permanent residents are all persons who have declared permanent residence in Lithuania.
It should be reminded that in 2020 the number of permanent residents in Lithuania increased for the first time in 28 years. Before that, the last increase in the number of residents was recorded in 1991.
