Latvian ministers deserve more
The ministers of Latvia’s government have voiced dissatisfaction with their pay and demanded an increase.
The liberal daily Diena sympathises:
This is in fact an unusual time for such a discussion. How dumb do you have to be to tell voters three months ahead of parliamentary elections that the poor ministers are completely unmotivated to work for 2,000 euros per month? But an increase in salary for ministers will also be seen as a symbolic step and sends a message to the public: our country is doing better and we can afford higher salaries. The same goes for doctors, police officers, fire-fighters, teachers and pensioners. They too want higher salaries and pensions.
… The ministers are only humans, and the desire for higher pay is absolutely human and understandable.
