By way of a homage to the memory of the world-renowned artist, Mark Rothko, and his artistic legacy, the city of Daugavpils just hosted the 15th international painting symposium “Mark Rothko”. Ten international artists spent a fortnight at the studios of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre. The group included Barbara Rosengarth (Germany), Chongyin Yuan (China), Dustyn Bork (USA), Ieva Lapiņa-Strazdīte (Latvia), James Kendall Higgins (USA), Kuzana Ogg (USA), Linda Kozule (Latvia), Rebecca Bradley (UK/ Ireland), Ritu Aggarwal (India) and Sergey Kryshtapovich (Belarus). The artists created unique artwork, inspired by the atmosphere and cultural environment of Rothko’s childhood city, Daugavpils fortress and Latgale region. Now the new paintings will be made publicly available in a group exhibition.
A different exhibition hall of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre will be the venue of another exhibition opening – the one-man-show by an artist from Liepāja, Māris Uldriķis (1939-2018). He studied at Decorative Design Department of Liepāja Secondary School of Applied Arts and at the Painting Department of the Art Academy of Latvia. The artist’s understanding of art is revealed in seemingly simple and laconic compositions. En masse, his works form an unbroken chain of philosophical reflections. A constant quest for plasticity and ways to reveal different psychological states enabled the author to create a number of brilliant self-portraits, yet another testament to his artistic excellence.
