Riga can surprise as cultural capital

Latvia’s capital Riga inaugurated its year as European capital of culture 2014 on the weekend with three days of celebrations. Over the course of the year more than 200 events will take place under the motto “Force Majeure”. Things have got off to a great start, the daily Diena writes in delight:

In January just 23 years ago, the Latvians fought for their freedom on the barricades in Riga. This weekend we came together under much more joyous circumstances to celebrate the city’s year as European capital of culture. Thousands of Latvians formed a two-kilometre chain to carry their favourite books from the old to the new national library.

… Latvia can surprise and inspire the world with its culture. The goal of this year as European Cultural capital is to put Riga on the world map
