Lithuania: The removal of the sculptures from Vilnius Green Bridge have been completed

The remaining four sculptures from the Green Bridge have been taking down in the capital city. Their conditions were hazardous to bypassing people and vehicles

Thus, aiming to assure greater pedestrian and vehicle traffic safety when crossing the bridge, the sculptures were removed starting, July 19, in the late evening up until dawn.

The City of Vilnius has gotten the permission to remove the four sculpture groups, which are more than 60 years old, from the Cultural Heritage Department. The new assessments of the conditions of the statues on the Green Bridge, done by Vilnius Gediminas Technical University experts, showed that separate sculpture pieces are unstable, and their conditions are critical stage.

The removal process was completed smoothly, just like planned. All four sculpture groups, each weighting from 3 to 5 tons, were moved to one of the Vilnius municipality’s safe sites, belonging to UAB “Grinda”. Currently, the statues are secured with special steel frames and are temporarily covered with black polyethylene film to protect from weathering. The territory is being monitored and recorded by cameras.

The removal of statues will cost around 38 thousand euros.

The repair of the Green Bridge pedestals will begin as soon as the concrete dries. After reparations, blooming flowers will be placed on them.

In addition, the community is invited to discuss what bridge they would like to see in the future.
