Klaipėda starts the year as the Capital of Culture

Wintry Klaipėda, together with the wide community of residents and honourable guests, has declared the start of the year as the Capital of Culture.

Klaipėda has always been and remains a beacon of culture in the region and the country.

I am convinced that the Lithuanian Capital of Culture will be present within us inasmuch as we cherish a belief that culture is an intrinsic part of life, faith, and values, said Mayor of Klaipėda Vytautas Grubliauskas in his address to Klaipėda residents.

Among the priority plans for Klaipėda for 2017 is to launch a city resident card system, which will offer an opportunity for people at the biggest social exclusion to integrate into the society and culture of Lithuania.

A card holder will receive information about events to be held, and will have a free or discounted access to museums and other cultural establishments, public transport, and parking places in the old town.

Klaipėda was designated as the Lithuanian Capital of Culture 2017 in 2015

The Programme, entitled Klaipėda: an Ice-Free Port of Culture 2017 comprises 5 platforms: Ice-Free History, Ice-Free Classics, Ice-Free Sea, Ice-Free Art, and Ice-Free City, which will correspond to the city’s major areas of culture and art, and will provide an umbrella to a range of culture and art projects.

The seaport city has taken over the title of the Lithuanian Capital of Culture from Telšiai.
