Tallinn: Visitors to tour historic tunnels by lantern light

On December 10, Tallinn’s Kiek in de Kök Museum will be offering special lantern-light tours of the 17th century tunnels that run beneath Toompea hill

During the “Bastion Tunnels by Lantern Light” event, which the museum is using to mark the start of the Christmas season, visitors will hear legends associated with the tunnels and have the rare opportunity to see sections not normally open to the public, an announcement from the museum stated.

The half-hour tours will be held from 14:00 to 17:30, and prior booking is required.

The tunnels, which date to the times of Swedish rule in Estonia, were originally built to help fend off attacks by the Russian troops, but were never used for that purpose. In World War II and during the Soviet period they served as bomb shelters, and in the 1990s were frequently used as a refuge by the homeless.

The Kiek in de Kök Tower and Museum will continue its seasonal celebrations through December 28 with a Christmas program designed for childrens’ groups.
