Finland wants to stop an EU Commission proposal for lowering fishing quotas in the Baltic.
The goal of the proposal is to preserve fish stocks, which can only be in Finland’s interest, the liberal daily Aamulehti points out:
“The Agricultural and Forestry Minister Jari Koskinen will present the Finnish position to the EU’s Agriculture and Fisheries Council today. The negative attitude to the proposal is particularly odd because the government’s programme stresses the preservation of salmon populations.
… The government prefers to secure the incomes of 160 professional fishermen, rather than allowing fish stocks and fishing tourism in the North to recover. The Finnish demands are also strange because we haven’t even managed to use up half of our quota so far.”
