The Midsummer holiday celebrations (Juhannus) begin today Friday in Finland. In view of the fatalities that accompany each year’s celebrations the daily Kaleva urges people to take care.
“Recklessness and the imbibing of huge quantities of alcohol are still a traditional part of Juhannus. The consequences are tragic. A grown person carries the main responsibility for himself, but when a person has lost his senses his friends should take care of him. In the past twenty years an average of ten people have died during the midsummer celebrations each year. In the last few years there has admittedly been an improvement.
… But as long as there are still fatalities the situation is not really good. Every single person who drowns is an unnecessary victim. …There have been many moving campaigns. And given the improving statistics one can safely conclude that the message is getting through to people. The work must be continued.”
